Trump Secures $130 Million Donation to Pay Active-Duty Soldiers During Government Shutdown

U.S. President Donald Trump announced on the 24th (local time) that he received a $130 million donation from a private citizen to ensure active-duty military personnel are compensated during the federal government shutdown.
According to reports, President Trump mentioned at a White House event the generous contribution made by a patriotic friend but did not disclose the identity of the donor.
Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell released a statement confirming that the Department of Defense accepted the donation under its general donation acceptance authority. He stated that the funds would be used to offset costs related to the salaries and allowances of military personnel.
The general donation acceptance authority allows the U.S. Department of Defense to receive and utilize donations meant for service members who become injured or ill during duty.
However, the $130 million donation is considered insufficient to cover the salaries of all active-duty U.S. military members, which number approximately 1.3 million. A simple calculation indicates that this amounts to roughly $100 (about 140,000 KRW) per service member. According to the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), the federal government spent over $191 billion (approximately 275 trillion KRW) on military salaries last year.
As the U.S. Congress continues to struggle with partisan divisions, leading to repeated failures in passing a temporary budget, the specter of a government shutdown has loomed since the 1st of this month. Concerns have arisen that active-duty military personnel may not receive their regular paychecks this month due to the ongoing funding impasse.
