Conductor Jin Sols Ambitious Journey to Perform All Mahler Symphonies

Conductor Jin Sol, 38, expressed a deep connection with composer Gustav Mahler during a press conference held on the afternoon of the 24th at Pungwoldang in Gangnam, Seoul. "I feel that my soul flies back to the time when Mahler was composing, and I sometimes feel like I am watching him compose," he shared. Jin Sol is on a mission to perform all of Mahlers symphonies over a decade, a project he began in 2017. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, he has persevered and is now on the brink of becoming the first conductor in a Korean civilian orchestra to complete the full cycle of Mahlers symphonies. He is set to perform Mahlers Symphony No. 4 on the 26th at the Seoul Arts Center. Earlier this month, he released a live album of Mahlers Symphony No. 3 through Warner Music.
Jin Sol has been a steadfast musician, maintaining the determination he showed in his twenties. After graduating from the Korea National University of Arts and the Mannheim University of Music and Performing Arts in Germany, he collaborated with various orchestras before founding the Mahlerian Orchestra as a private project at the age of 29 in 2016. His goal was to perform all ten of Mahlers symphonies, including the unfinished Symphony No. 10. Completing the full cycle of Mahlers symphonies was traditionally viewed as a task only possible for seasoned conductors leading large orchestras with over 100 members due to the complexity and grand scale of the works, which often include large orchestras and choirs, alongside challenging compositions that even experts struggle to grasp.
Once he performs Symphony No. 4, only Mahlers Symphony No. 2 and No. 8 will remain in Jin Sols project. Reflecting on why he set the ambitious goal of performing all Mahler symphonies in his twenties, he remarked, "It was a bold challenge, but at the time, I thought, young people can also perform such works..." The journey of Jin Sol stands testament to determination and a passion for classical music, as he continues to honor Mahlers legacy through his performances.
