Concerns Over Rising Crime in Cambodia Halt Missionary Activities

As concerns grow over rising crime rates and safety issues in Cambodia, missionary and volunteer activities are facing criticism for allegedly putting participants at risk, leading to the suspension of planned schedules.
Recently, a church in the metropolitan area changed its short-term missionary and volunteer recruitment posts on social media to private. The church had planned a short-term mission trip to Cambodia starting on the 28th of next month for approximately one week. However, amid travel bans issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for certain areas in Cambodia and increasing worries about participant safety, the church ultimately decided to cancel the trip.
Discussions have also erupted on the Naver Cafe Korean Church Victim Group regarding another religious organizations upcoming mission to the Kampong Cham region of Cambodia next year. Although operations of the National Information Resource Management Agency were suspended due to a fire, a post urged members to file complaints with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the polices foreign affairs division, and the National Human Rights Commission as soon as the system is restored.
The author of the post stated, "This church has continuously conducted missionary activities in Cambodia targeting young congregants," and requested an investigation into the churchs missionary activities in Cambodia from January to August of this year. They also urged for immediate verification and suspension of the planned Kampong Cham mission activities for 2026.
Furthermore, the author called for administrative and criminal action from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and relevant authorities against the leadership who dispatched young congregants to areas under travel bans. They urged for the enhancement of safety training obligations for religious organizations sending members abroad and improvements in the government reporting procedures.
However, the organization later stated that it has no plans for a mission trip to Cambodia next year and confirmed that it has not sent individuals to the region since January of this year.
