Intense Talent War Among Global Universities: Sungkyunkwan University Takes the Lead
The war for talent among global universities has intensified. South Korean universities are not only competing against prestigious institutions abroad but also facing competition from global companies that are luring top scholars with attractive salaries. In this environment, Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU) has garnered attention for its aggressive recruitment of talented individuals. The university has successfully attracted practical engineering talents from Apple, Google, and Tesla, as well as globally recognized scholars designated as highly cited researchers (HCR).
The results of this talent acquisition are reflected in research achievements. In last years INUE and Korea Economic University rankings, SKKU secured the second position overall, following Seoul National University, and was ranked first among private universities. Each faculty member at SKKU produced an average of 1.09 SCI (Science Citation Index) publications, surpassing both Seoul National University and KAIST, achieving a perfect score.
In a recent interview with President Yoo Ji-beom of Sungkyunkwan University, we explored the strategies that have enhanced the universitys competitiveness.
"Our strengths lie in speed and flexibility. When departments propose candidates for faculty selection, the administration quickly decides on hiring. This process is a race against time. We can complete the procedures within a month, and sometimes decisions are made on the day of the interview. The reason is simple: these are talents that every university desires," he explained.
"There are structural limitations to personnel cost support. Instead, we demonstrate flexibility in investing in research infrastructure. When we receive a wish list detailing necessary equipment, if we deem it useful for the university, we can support equipment costing tens of millions of won. Excellent researchers can receive support exceeding 1 billion won, including equipment assistance and settlement grants."
SKKUs proactive approach not only attracts top talent but also fosters an environment conducive to research excellence, positioning the university as a leader in the competitive landscape of higher education.
