As international oil prices surge due to the ongoing conflict between the U.S. and Iran, major Japanese airlines are expected to raise their international flight fuel surcharges by up to double starting in June.

According to a report by the Yomiuri Shimbun, All Nippon Airways (ANA) and Japan Airlines (JAL) plan to increase their fuel surcharges for tickets issued in June and July to levels 1.5 to 2 times higher than those in April and May.

For routes between South Korea and Japan, ANA is expected to raise its surcharge from 3,300 yen (approximately $31) in April and May to 6,500 yen (approximately $62) in June and July. Similarly, JALs surcharge is projected to increase from 3,000 yen (approximately $29) to 5,900 yen (approximately $56) during the same period.

When calculated for round-trip tickets, this means that the fuel surcharge alone could nearly double the cost of airfare. This hike, especially coming just before the busy summer vacation season, is likely to place a significant burden on travelers planning trips to Japan, as well as on Japanese citizens traveling abroad.

The increases are even steeper for routes to Europe and North America. ANAs surcharge is expected to rise dramatically from 31,900 yen (around $300) in April and May to 59,000 yen (approximately $560) in June and July, while JAL is anticipated to increase its surcharge from 29,000 yen (around $280) to 50,000 yen (approximately $470).

Both airlines have raised their surcharges significantly since the introduction of the fuel surcharge system in 2005, notably during the 2022 conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

The Yomiuri Shimbun forecasts that the current fuel surcharges could reach historic highs due to escalating tensions in the Middle East driving oil prices up. The newspaper warns that if fuel prices continue to rise, the airlines may not be able to sustain operations solely through fuel surcharges. It also suggests that airlines might need to adjust ticket prices to avoid worsening profitability issues.

Additionally, this situation could lead to a decrease in overseas travel for Japanese citizens and a reduction in foreign tourists visiting Japan.
