Korean Pianist Brothers Fail to Reach Finals at Chopin International Piano Competition

The 19th International Chopin Piano Competition, taking place in Warsaw, Poland, has entered its final stage from October 18 to 20 (local time). Unfortunately, the Korean pianist brothers, Lee Hyuk and Lee Hyo, did not advance to the finals. However, they expressed their heartfelt gratitude for the overwhelming support from fans throughout the competition.
On October 17, the brothers took to their official social media accounts to thank their fans, stating, "We are grateful to have had the opportunity to share our passion and love for Frederic Chopin during this competition." They added, "We look forward to seeing you at our concerts in the future and hope to meet again soon."
Since the beginning of the main competition, both brothers made it to the third round, which included 20 participants, garnering significant attention from local media and classical music fans. It is quite rare for siblings to advance to the finals in such a prestigious competition as the Chopin Competition, making this a notable achievement. The last time brothers from Korea, Lim Dong-min and Lim Dong-hyuk, reached the finals together was 20 years ago, marking the Lee brothers participation as a significant milestone.
However, the list of finalists announced on October 16 did not include their names, leading to disappointment among fans and observers, as many had speculated that at least one of them was likely to advance to the finals.
In an interview shortly after the third round, Lee Hyuk commented, "This stage is indeed important, but I dont feel it is particularly more significant than others. I am still focused on the music itself." Lee Hyuk had previously reached the finals in the 2021 competition and was considered a returning participant.
Having studied in Russia, he relocated to Poland following the war in Ukraine, and continues to pursue his musical career with dedication. The Lee brothers journey reflects their deep commitment to classical music and their admiration for Chopin, which they have showcased throughout the competition.
