President Lee Jae-myung Addresses Tax Relief for Non-resident Homeowners

On the 1st of the month, President Lee Jae-myung stated concerning tax relief for long-term ownership of non-resident homes, "It is evident that those temporarily non-resident due to unavoidable reasons such as work are excluded from the tax exemption criteria."
President Lee made these comments via a post on X (formerly Twitter) in response to an article highlighting the difficulties faced by non-resident homeowners who find it challenging to sell or lease their properties. He demanded a correction to the article that claimed non-resident homeowners were struggling to manage their properties.
Sharing an article titled, "It’s not for speculative purposes... It’s difficult to sell, rent, or live in the house," President Lee pointed out that the article discussed the Lee Jae-myung administrations consideration of strengthening property taxes on non-resident homes. The article revealed that people who are not living in their homes due to reasons such as childrens education are expressing their distress.
In response, President Lee reiterated his earlier statement, saying, "If a non-resident home is not for investment or speculation, then tax relief for long-term ownership is justified. However, if it is for residential purposes and the person is temporarily non-resident due to unavoidable circumstances like work, it is clear that they should be exempt."
He further questioned the inconsistency in the article, stating, "In the same in-depth feature, it asks, What should those who cannot reside temporarily due to work or childrens education do? Is this a lack of understanding or a deliberate omission?" He urged for a more thorough analysis and correction of the article, calling it "clearly contradictory."
Previously, President Lee had hinted at a tax reform aimed at reducing tax relief for long-term ownership of non-resident homes. This discussion aligns with ongoing debates about housing and tax policies in the country, reflecting the challenges faced by homeowners in balancing their residential and financial responsibilities.
