Walking through the streets of Gwangjin-gu, where Ive lived with my family since childhood, I paused in front of Hwayang Elementary School, my alma mater. The playground, once filled with the laughter of children, is now a public parking lot and a space for residents to exercise. The empty schoolyard symbolizes the looming threat of low birth rates, a crisis that has quietly crept into our lives.

Its not just the school thats affected. The childcare centers within our apartment complex, which once provided robust support for parents raising children, have started to close one by one. Now, even the teachers at these childcare centers are left worrying about their jobs.

After registering as a preliminary candidate for the Seoul City Council, I find myself walking through the alleys of Gwangjin-gu every day. The most significant threat to South Koreas economy, the changing demographic structure, has visibly altered the landscape right outside my home. Despite pouring astronomical budgets into addressing this issue, the population crisis has only deepened. This is due to a simplistic approach of merely distributing cash benefits rather than making structural reforms.

The role of local government must now shift towards practical administration that transforms idle public buildings, such as closed schools, into new engines for the local economy.

I began my journey as a laborer in my twenties, experiencing the harsh realities of our society firsthand. This motivated me to become an expert in labor issues and law. My first significant idea, born out of my experiences at the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions and Gyeonggi Provincial Government, is the Gwangjin ON-Dol (Safe Care) Project.

As the number of abandoned schools like Hwayang Elementary continues to rise in Seoul, we must remodel these idle public spaces into public care hubs that serve the communitys needs. This initiative is not just about repurposing buildings; its about creating a supportive environment for families and ensuring that our neighborhoods can thrive despite demographic challenges. We must act now to transform our communities for the better.
