Garak Market Kimjang Festival: A Major Winter Sharing Event in Seoul
The largest Kimjang sharing event in South Korea, the Garak Market Kimjang Sharing Citizen Festival (Garak Kimjang Festival), will take place on the morning of the 17th at 10 AM at the rooftop park (Sky Park) on the 3rd floor of Garak Market in Seoul. This prominent winter sharing event involves citizens, distributors, and volunteers coming together to make kimchi, which will then be distributed to 10,000 vulnerable households.
According to the Seoul Agricultural and Marine Products Corporation on the 10th, the Garak Kimjang Festival started in 2008 and has reached its 18th iteration this year. The festival is organized with joint funding from the Garak Market distributors and the corporation, with participation from citizens, children, and foreign volunteers who help in the kimchi-making process. Notably, even during the COVID-19 pandemic when large gatherings were challenging, the festival continued uninterrupted, producing 10,000 boxes of finished kimchi through HACCP-certified companies.
The event is overseen by the non-profit organization Hope Sharing Market, established in 2010 to integrate social contribution activities at Garak Market. Since the markets opening in 1985, various donation activities scattered by type were consolidated into the Garak Market Hope Sharing Volunteer Group in 2008. The corporation explained that the event has played a role beyond simple kimchi distribution, helping to spread corporate and organizational social contribution models.
Hope Sharing Market is also expanding community support projects by leveraging Garak Markets distribution capabilities. This year, 1.5 billion won was provided to areas affected by major wildfires in the Yeongnam region, and the Hey Kids, Lets Eat Fruit project, which supports seasonal fruits for childrens centers in Seoul, has been expanded to 1.3 billion won, double the amount from the previous year.
