A representative of a civic group that has held protests insulting victims of the Japanese military comfort women has been indicted while in custody. The Seoul Central District Prosecutors Office, Public Prosecution Division 3, announced on the 13th that Kim Byung-heon, the head of the Citizens Action for the Abolition of the Comfort Women Law, has been arrested and indicted on charges including defamation under the Information and Communications Network Act and defamation of the deceased for insulting comfort women victims.

According to the prosecution, Kim is accused of posting 69 derogatory messages on his social media from January 2024 for one year, referring to the victims as fake and prostituted women. He is also charged with holding an unauthorized rally in front of a high school in Seoul last December, where he displayed banners related to prostitution career guidance, causing mental distress to students.

The prosecution emphasized that they closely collaborated with the police from the early stages of the investigation, attending Kims pre-arrest interrogation to thoroughly explain the necessity of his detention. Following the transfer of the case, they clarified the motive for his actions through supplementary investigations, including analysis of accounts and forensic evidence.

Investigations revealed that Kim received financial support from domestic and Japanese backers based on his distorted perception of denying the suffering of the Japanese military comfort women, continuously disseminating his erroneous beliefs. Notably, it was found that he had received approximately 76 million won (about $64,000) from supportive factions in Japan over a span of five years.

The prosecution highlighted that the funding from pro-Japanese groups served as the main source of operational funds, enabling his long-term criminal activities. Furthermore, it was confirmed that the motives behind his actions were aimed at erasing the historical narrative of the Japanese military comfort women victims.

Additionally, the prosecution is taking measures to delete and block defamation content to protect the victims involved in this case.
