Chinese Martial Artist Injured in World Power Slap Competition

The ninth successor of Chinas traditional martial art Tongbeiquan suffered a serious injury during the World Power Slap competition, where he had his cheekbone fractured in a single blow.
On the 8th (local time), the South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported that Chinese martial artist Zhao Hongqiang, 35, participated as a representative of China in the World Power Slap competition held on the 1st in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Power Slap is a sport where two competitors stand facing each other and take turns slapping each other’s cheeks, characterized by the inability to dodge or defend against the strikes. The event was organized by the Power Slap League, which was founded by UFC representative Dana White in 2022.
In a pre-match interview, Zhao expressed confidence, stating, "I will prove the power of Tongbeiquan to the world." Known as a true martial artist, he boasts 1.5 million followers and has gained fame for breaking bricks and bending steel rods with his bare hands in various entertainment programs.
Zhao is recognized as the ninth inheritor of Tongbeiquan, which has been designated as an intangible cultural heritage by the Chinese government. This martial art, with a history of over 2000 years, is said to be inspired by the movements of monkeys. It is also well-known in China as a martial art featured in the Japanese comic Kung Fu Boy Ching-Mi.
However, the outcome of the competition was devastating. In the first round, he suffered swelling and a cut around his eye from the initial strike by Kazakh athlete Mukhamad Amantaev. In the third round, he was hit harder and fell to the canvas. Medical examinations revealed that he had fractured his right cheekbone and required five stitches around his eye.
After the match, Zhao took to social media to inform his followers that he had undergone surgery for the stitches around his eye and was diagnosed with no brain damage. He expressed gratitude for the support he received during his recovery.
Zhao is currently recuperating and has plans for the future...
