The Rise of Home Humanoid Robots: Introducing NEO by 1X Technologies
Humanoid robots, once confined to industrial settings, are now making their way into everyday life. Following the unveiling of the home humanoid robot NEO by the American AI robotics company 1X Technologies, competitors from Germany and China are joining the race by introducing their own household robots. The vision of robots doing dishes and feeding pets has become a reality. Experts predict that by 2030, humanoid robots will be widely adopted in households, ushering in an era where every person may own a robot.
On October 10, the New York Post reported that 1X is set to launch NEO, a home humanoid robot standing 167 cm tall and weighing 30 kg, next year. 1X pioneered the home humanoid market in 2017 with the launch of EVE, the precursor to NEO. After unveiling a prototype of NEO in September last year, the company has now revealed the final product intended for sale. NEO is designed to be agile, with hands that mimic human dexterity, and is made from a lightweight and flexible composite material known as 3D Lattice Polymer, which is resistant to impacts and provides a soft body.
Once fully charged, NEO is reported to operate for about four hours. According to the New York Post, the advantage of having NEO handle household chores is that it allows owners to focus more on their work. For instance, NEO can open the door for guests or feed pets. Additionally, it features waterproof capabilities, enabling it to assist with dishwashing and laundry tasks.
Users can monitor NEO’s activities remotely through a connected mobile app, ensuring that household tasks are managed even when they are away. A representative from 1X stated, "NEO utilizes a large language model (LLM) to converse with people, recognize objects, and retain memory across various interactions with humans." The price of NEO is yet to be announced, but the introduction of such a robot marks a significant step towards integrating advanced robotics into our daily lives.
