AI Winter Photography Trend Takes Social Media by Storm

The sight of white snow falling, pristine white landscapes, and the rosy tips of noses peeking out from thick winter coats evoke images reminiscent of the poster for the Japanese film Love Letter. This captivating imagery has become a viral sensation among the MZ generation (Millennials + Generation Z) on social media, referred to as AI Winter 3 Cuts.
Although AI-generated photo content has enjoyed popularity in the past, it has struggled to maintain momentum. However, it is now beginning to generate stable revenue through paid subscriptions. Camera apps like Snow and Meitu are offering free trials of their related services between 2 to 5 times. Users attracted by this sample content are transitioning into paid subscriptions.
According to industry reports, the user base of the camera apps Snow and Meitu has surged, particularly due to the AI Winter 3 Cuts content. Meitu launched this feature on October 28, while Snow introduced it a few days later on October 31. Data from Wiseapp & Retail indicates that Meitus weekly active users (WAU) skyrocketed from 513,587 in the fourth week of October (October 20-26) to 1,805,878 in the fifth week (October 27-November 2), increasing more than 3.5 times. Snow also saw a growth in users, rising from 2,261,199 to 2,306,069 during the same period.
Using these apps is simple. Users can apply their own selfies or photos featuring their faces to the desired AI concept images. As demonstrated by a recent test, both Snow and Meitu produced AI content within a minute. The results showcased the user’s likeness against a realistic background similar to that in Love Letter, with poses and compositions akin to templates. The rendering of skin texture, eye expressions, and lighting appeared remarkably natural.
Currently, related content is flourishing on platforms like Instagram and other social media, capturing the attention of users across the globe. As the trend continues to grow, the intersection of technology and creativity through AI photography offers a fresh and engaging outlet for self-expression during the winter season.
