Jang Ryul, 63, has lived as a boundary figure. Born into a Korean-Chinese family in Yanbian, he represents the third generation of overseas Koreans. His life journey, which began as a novelist and transitioned to a film director at the age of 40, reflects this unique identity. Navigating the space between Korea and China, his artistic trajectory, moving from the written word to the screen, has led him to pursue a path as a free artist, transcending discussions of nationality and genre.

Jang Ryul has a deep connection with the Busan International Film Festival (BIFF). He first gained recognition in 2005 when his film Mangjong won the New Currents Award. In 2016, his work Chunmong was selected as the opening film. Each of his productions has found its audience through BIFF, showcasing his evolving artistic vision. He also took on the role of principal for the Chanel X BIFF Asian Film Academy, aimed at discovering emerging filmmakers.

At the recently concluded 30th BIFF, Jang Ryul solidified his status as a master who has established a pillar of Asian cinema beyond the confines of a border dweller. His latest film Twilight of Luomu earned him the Busan Award, a newly established competitive category at the festival. He expressed his readiness to return, stating, If Busan calls, I will jump at the opportunity anytime.

Through his works, Jang Ryul continues to challenge boundaries, both personal and cultural, making significant contributions to the cinematic landscape in Asia.
