Aaron Rai Triumphs in DP World Tour Playoff Against Tommy Fleetwood
Aaron Rai, known as the Man with Two Gloves, secured his third victory on the DP World Tour (formerly European Tour) after a thrilling playoff against fellow Englishman Tommy Fleetwood.
On October 9th (Korean time), Rai triumphed at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, the first playoff event of the DP World Tour, held at Yas Golf Links GC in Abu Dhabi, UAE. The win came with a prize of €1,318,000 (approximately 22.18 billion KRW).
Rai gained momentum earlier in the tournament when he made an albatross on the 2nd hole (par 5) during the second round from a distance of 186 meters. This propelled him to a one-shot lead going into the final round, where he recorded seven birdies and two bogeys for a five-under-par 67. He finished the tournament with a total score of 25-under-par 263, tying with Fleetwood.
In the first playoff hole (the 18th, par 5), Rai sealed his victory by sinking a 2-meter birdie putt, while Fleetwood could only manage a par, finishing as the runner-up.
Born in 1995, Rais victory marked his third on the DP World Tour, coming five years and one month after his last win at the Aberdeen Standard Investments Scottish Open in October 2010. Interestingly, Fleetwood was also his opponent during that previous playoff.
Rai has now established himself as a nemesis for Fleetwood, stating, "Tommy is not just an excellent player but a great person too. It was an honor to play alongside him and share the same space over the past two days."
Rai, who gained attention for his unique style of wearing gloves on both hands, secured his first win on the PGA Tour at the Wyndham Championship in August last year. Growing up in a family of Indian immigrant laborers, he developed the habit of wearing gloves on both hands after receiving a pair as a gift at the age of eight.
