Exploring Samcheong-dong and the Historic Seonhye-won in Bukaksan

Nestled beneath Bukaksan Mountain, Samcheong-dong is a serene neighborhood that becomes increasingly tranquil as you head north. While the entrance is bustling with tourists due to its proximity to Gyeongbokgung Palace, a stroll along the cozy, narrow two-lane road leads you to Samcheong Park, where one can always find a sense of peace in this dignified area. At the intersection near Samcheong Park, if you turn left and gaze at the majestic Bukaksan, you will immediately find Seonhye-won.
Samcheong-dong derives its name from historical records, notably the "Han-gyeong Si-ryak," which describes the area during the late Joseon Dynasty, translating to mountains are clear (山淸), water is also clear (水淸), and therefore the people’s hearts are clear and good (人淸). This description perfectly encapsulates the essence of the neighborhood, which is situated snugly at the southeastern foot of Bukaksan, welcoming everyone with warmth.
Seonhye-won, originally a Western-style mansion, was purchased in 1968 by the late Choi Jong-geun, the founder of SK Group, who resided there until his passing. After his death, it was used as a training center for SK Group but has now been officially opened as an art space for the public. Before its public unveiling, it underwent a significant transformation, thanks to a collaboration between SKM Architects and Professor Kim Bong-ryeol, an honorary professor at the Korea National University of Arts, turning it into three traditional Hanok houses.
Initially, before visiting, there was a longing to see the original Western-style mansion preserved in its entirety. However, those sentiments disappeared upon witnessing Seonhye-won, as the architectural beauty of the newly constructed Hanoks is truly overwhelming.
Seonhye-won is adjacent to Samcheong-ro, the road that cuts through Samcheong-dong. However, it is situated at a higher elevation, offering a unique perspective of the surrounding landscape. This transformation of Seonhye-won not only preserves history but also enhances the cultural tapestry of Samcheong-dong, making it a must-visit for anyone interested in the rich heritage and modern artistic expressions of Seoul.
