New York Philharmonic Welcomes Gustavo Dudamel as New Music Director

The New York Philharmonic is set to welcome Gustavo Dudamel as its new music director. This exciting development comes through the efforts of Matthias Tarnopolsky, the Philharmonics CEO and a long-time friend of Dudamel, who have known each other for 20 years. During Tarnopolskys recent visit to Korea, we had the opportunity to discuss the allure of the New York Philharmonic and the expectations surrounding Dudamels appointment.
Founded in 1842, the New York Philharmonic is the oldest symphony orchestra in the United States and is consistently recognized as one of the top five orchestras in America. The Philharmonic gained international prominence after Gustav Mahler took on the role of principal conductor in 1909. Some even regard it as one of the worlds top three orchestras, alongside the Berlin Philharmonic and the Vienna Philharmonic. The New York Philharmonic recently performed in South Korea from June 26-28, marking its first visit in 11 years under the baton of conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen.
A significant change is on the horizon for the New York Philharmonic as "the superstar of conducting," Dudamel, is scheduled to assume the position of music director in September next year. Born in Venezuela in 1981, Dudamel became the youngest music director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic at just 28 years old in 2009, sparking a phenomenon known as Dudamania due to his immense popularity. Interestingly, Tarnopolsky’s connection with Dudamel began in 2005 when they first spoke on the phone.
Tarnopolskys ability to speak Spanish, Dudamels native language, helped forge a close relationship between the two. After joining the New York Philharmonic in January 2006, Tarnopolskys first assignment was to meet Dudamel. As he took on the role of concert planner, Tarnopolsky traveled to Caracas, Venezuela, to bring Dudamel to the stage. Their collaboration has now come full circle, with Dudamel poised to lead the orchestra into a new era.
As the New York Philharmonic prepares for this new chapter under Dudamels leadership, expectations are high for the artistic direction and innovative programming he will bring to the legendary orchestra. Amidst the backdrop of a rich history and a vibrant musical landscape, the Philharmonic is gearing up for an exciting future.
