Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Performs in Busan for the First Time

The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra (RCO) has made its way to Busan, marking a significant moment as it becomes the first of the worlds top three orchestras to perform at the newly opened Busan Concert Hall, which debuted in June. The audience responded with enthusiastic standing ovations to the RCOs performance, expertly conducted by the genius Klaus Mäkelä, who made full use of the halls rich acoustics.
The concert on the 9th of September drew the attention of classical music fans even before it began. The RCO, along with other renowned ensembles like the Vienna Philharmonic and the Berlin Philharmonic, is scheduled to perform a total of ten concerts in South Korea this year, with the Busan concert being the only performance outside of Seoul. The Busan Concert Hall is a large classical music venue with a capacity of 2,011 seats, making it the first major classical music hall outside the capital to exceed 2,000 seats.
The news of a top-tier orchestra visiting Busan caused tickets to sell out within a minute of their release in August, demonstrating the excitement surrounding the event. The concert was particularly special for the Busan Concert Hall, which has hosted renowned orchestras under its World Series banner. In September, the famed La Scala Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Chung Myung-whun performed, and in October, the London Philharmonic Orchestra will take the stage in collaboration with pianist Son Yeol-eum. The RCOs concert served as the grand finale of this impressive series.
A 40-year-old Busan resident, Kim Tae-sung, expressed her joy, stating, "It feels like a dream to see the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and Mäkelä in Busan. I can enjoy their delicate and fluid sounds without having to go to Seoul."
The atmosphere before the concert was electric, with crowds gathering in droves. At the ticket booth on the basement level, over 200 people lined up for their tickets, creating a remarkable scene. The orchestras first entrance was also met with heightened anticipation, setting the stage for a memorable night of music.
