Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Performs in Busan for the First Time
The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra (RCO) has made its debut performance in Busan. This event marks the first time one of the worlds top three orchestras has performed at the Busan Concert Hall, which opened in June. The audience gave a standing ovation to the RCO, under the baton of the genius conductor Klaus Mäkelä, who fully utilized the unique acoustics of the Busan Concert Hall.
The concert held on the 9th of the month drew the attention of classical music fans even before its commencement. The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, alongside other prestigious ensembles like the Vienna Philharmonic and the Berlin Philharmonic, is scheduled to perform a total of nine concerts in South Korea this year. Among these, the Busan performance is the only one taking place outside of Seoul. With a seating capacity of 2,011, the Busan Concert Hall is the first large-scale classical music venue in a non-capital area to exceed 2,000 seats. News of a top-tier orchestra visiting Busan led to tickets selling out within just one minute of their release in August.
This performance was particularly special for the Busan Concert Hall. The venue has hosted renowned orchestras under the title World Series. In September, the La Scala Philharmonic from Italy, conducted by Chung Myung-Whun, performed, and in October, the London Philharmonic Orchestra collaborated with pianist Son Yeol-eum. The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra concluded this series with their performance.
A local resident in her 40s, Kim Tae-sung, who attended both previous series concerts as well as the RCOs concert in Seoul, expressed her excitement: "Its a dream come true to see the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and Mäkelä in Busan. Now I can enjoy their delicate and fluid sounds without having to travel to Seoul."
