53 Members of Cambodian International Voice Phishing Organization Indicted in South Korea

Members of an international voice phishing organization operating out of Cambodia have been indicted in South Korea after being repatriated following their arrest. The Daejeon District Prosecutors Office announced on the 12th that 53 individuals affiliated with a corporate-style international voice phishing group based in Southeast Asia, including Cambodia and Thailand, have been charged with violations of the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Economic Crimes (Fraud).
Among these, 45 individuals were involved in criminal activities in Cambodia and were detained by immigration authorities before being sent back to South Korea on the 18th of last month. The group, which includes a 25-year-old identified as A, is accused of participating in an international voice phishing call center from June of last year to July of this year, contributing to a total fraud of approximately 9.4 billion KRW from 110 victims in South Korea through various scams such as romance scams, cryptocurrency investment scams, and impersonation scams involving public officials.
The criminal organization is said to be led by a figure known as B, a Korean-Chinese national, and consists of around 200 members. The structure includes the main leader, sub-leaders, managers, team leaders, and phishing teams. The phishing team is organized with roles such as chatter to lure victims, TM to guide phone calls, killer to induce victim payments, and team leaders to train and manage performance.
Prosecutors explained that this organization operates in an increasingly sophisticated manner, sending and training members to learn new voice phishing techniques from other local organizations in Southeast Asia. The authorities have identified the main leader B and have obtained an arrest warrant, issuing a red notice through Interpol. Currently, they are working with the Ministry of Justice to secure the leaders capture through a task force focused on the repatriation of voice phishing criminals.
Additionally, prosecutors have taken measures to freeze 89 virtual asset exchange accounts believed to be used by the organization for money laundering purposes.
