Eleven members of a group involved in romance scams in Cambodia have been handed over to prosecutors. These individuals, referred to as the TK Group (an acronym for Tuol Kouk), operated in a systematic manner under a leader.

According to the Northern Gyeonggi Police Agency, 11 out of 15 suspects arrested in Cambodia have been transferred to custody on charges of violating the Telecommunications Fraud Damage Compensation Act. The arrest took place on the 28th of the month.

The police reported that these suspects approached victims through social media, using conditional meetings as bait to extort money from them. Investigations revealed that they scammed each victim out of hundreds of thousands to even billions of won.

The group based its operations out of a 13-story building in the Tuol Kouk area of Phnom Penh, Cambodia. After local crackdowns intensified, they moved to a seven-story building in the Sensok area to continue their activities until they were apprehended by local authorities.

The organization was structured in a pyramid format, with the leader at the top, followed by managers, team leaders, a marketing team, and an entrapment team. The marketing team posted dating advertisements on social media, while the entrapment team pretended to be women in chat conversations to gain the victims trust. They utilized systematic methods, such as offering refunds on membership fees after passing three verification missions.

They operated under strict security measures, using aliases and prohibiting phone use and photography during work hours. At night, they drew curtains to block outside views and restricted information sharing between departments.

So far, 36 victims have been confirmed, with the total amount scammed reaching 1.6 billion won. Police believe that the scale of the fraud may increase, considering the brief investigation period.

Meanwhile, some suspects reportedly refused to heed the embassys advice to return home, believing that the leader would secure their release through lobbying with local authorities while in custody.
