Granddaughter of Namyang Dairy Founder Arrested on Drug Charges

Hwang Hana (37), the granddaughter of the founder of Namyang Dairy, has been transferred to the prosecution after being arrested on drug charges. On the 2nd, the Gyeonggi Gwangju Police announced that they had handed over Hwang to the Suwon District Prosecutors Office in Anyang for violations of the Narcotics Control Act.
Hwang was seen leaving the detention center at the Anyang Dongan Police Station in a police van heading to the prosecutors office. She is expected to be investigated by the prosecution while being held at the Seoul Detention Center.
She faces allegations of administering methamphetamine via syringe to two acquaintances in Gangnam, Seoul, in July 2023. At that time, Hwang was already under investigation and fled to Thailand in December of that year. After her passport was rendered invalid, she reportedly entered Cambodia illegally and stayed there.
The police apprehended Hwang on September 24 at Phnom Penh International Airport after she expressed her intention to voluntarily appear before them. Two days later, she was placed under arrest following a court review of the warrant.
However, Hwang has denied the charges against her. Some entertainment media have reported suspicions that she may have been involved in drug distribution or facilitated prostitution during her time in hiding abroad, but no additional charges have been confirmed through the police investigation.
Hwang has drawn significant public attention not only for being the granddaughter of the Namyang Dairy founder but also for her previous relationship with singer and actor Park Yu-chun. In the past, she was indicted for three instances of methamphetamine use at her home in Seoul between May and September 2015, receiving a one-year prison sentence with a two-year probation in 2019. The following year, she was sentenced to one year and eight months in prison for further drug use during her probation period.
