Namyang Dairy Founder’s Granddaughter Hwang Hana Arrested for Drug Charges

Hwang Hana, the 37-year-old granddaughter of the founder of Namyang Dairy, is set to be handed over to the prosecution while in custody on drug-related charges. The Gyeonggi Gwacheon Police announced on the 1st that they plan to transfer Hwang, who has been detained for violating drug management laws, to the Suwon District Prosecutors Office in Anyang on the 2nd.
Hwang is accused of administering methamphetamine to two acquaintances using a syringe in Gangnam, Seoul, in July 2023. Following this incident, she fled to Thailand in December of the same year while under investigation. After her passport became invalid, she illegally entered Cambodia, where she remained.
The police apprehended Hwang at Phnom Penhs international airport on December 24 after she expressed her intention to voluntarily return to South Korea. During police questioning, she reportedly denied the allegations against her. However, the court issued a detention warrant, citing concerns over potential evidence tampering.
Some entertainment media outlets have reported suspicions that Hwang may have been involved in drug distribution or sex trafficking during her time abroad. However, the police have clarified that there are no confirmed charges in this regard.
Hwang has drawn public attention not only because she is the granddaughter of the founder of Namyang Dairy but also for her previous relationship with singer and actor Park Yoochun.
Previously, in 2015, Hwang was indicted for using methamphetamine three times at her home in Seoul and received a one-year prison sentence with a two-year suspended sentence in 2019. She was subsequently prosecuted again for drug use during her probation period and was sentenced to one year and eight months in prison.
