Prosecutors Seek Four-Year Sentence for Former Unification Church Leader in Political Scandal

The special investigation team, led by Min Jung-ki, has requested a total sentence of four years in prison for Yoon Young-ho, the former head of the Unification Churchs global headquarters, who has been indicted on charges of providing money and gifts to Kim Geon-hee, the wife of South Koreas President, and for allegedly organizing support for members of the ruling People Power Party.
During the sentencing hearing on the 10th, the Seoul Central District Courts Criminal Division 27, presided over by Judge Woo In-sung, was informed of the prosecutions position on the matter. Yoon has been charged with embezzlement, violation of political funding laws, evidence destruction, and violations of the anti-corruption act. The special investigation team has requested a two-year prison sentence for the political funding violation and another two years for the remaining three charges, including embezzlement and evidence destruction.
In their closing arguments, the special investigation team stated, "Yoon Young-ho colluded with political powers to expand the influence of the Unification Church and his own power. This constitutes a serious crime that undermines representative democracy and has significant repercussions that shake public trust to its core."
The team further claimed that Yoon had facilitated requests related to the Unification Church through lawmaker Kwon Seon-dong and had mobilized Unification Church members for the People Power Partys leadership election. They also alleged that through Jeon Seong-bae of the Ganjin Shaman, Yoon attempted to resolve issues related to the Unification Church by providing money to Kim Geon-hee through two separate channels.
Following the prosecutions closing remarks, Yoons defense team argued that he did not exclusively support any particular political party. They maintained that Yoon did not limit his support to a specific faction leading up to the Unification Church event in 2022.
The defense stated, "In accordance with the Unification Churchs philosophy of peace, it was essential to include candidates from both the People Power Party and the Democratic Party during that time. Therefore, the Unification Church did not approach any specific political party."
As the case unfolds, the implications of this scandal continue to impact the political landscape in South Korea, raising questions about the intersection of religion and politics in the nation.
