Rising Concerns Over Cambodian Crime Syndicate Following Death of Korean Student

Following the reported torture and death of a Korean university student, interest in Cambodian crime organizations has surged, alongside concerns about the spread of misinformation.
On the 18th, 64 Koreans who were involved with a crime syndicate in Cambodia were repatriated to South Korea. Rumors began circulating on social media and online communities that 45 of these individuals were from a university in the Chungnam region. This speculation arose when those being repatriated were transferred to the Chungnam police station.
This issue was also raised during the National Assemblys Administrative Safety Committees audit on the 27th.
Democratic Party lawmaker Lee Hae-sik questioned Chungnam Provincial Police Chief Lim Jeong-joo about the identity of the repatriated individuals, stating, "Among the 64 repatriated from Cambodia, 45 have been transferred to Chungnam police. I would like to ask if investigations are solely being conducted domestically or if there are inquiries happening in Cambodia as well."
Another lawmaker, Mo Gyeong-jong, expressed suspicions that most of the 45 individuals who returned from Cambodia were students from the same university in Chungnam.
In response, Police Chief Lim stated, "I cannot disclose specific university names at this moment, but not all suspects are from the same university. The university has also requested that an additional investigation be conducted, and we will continue our inquiries."
According to police reports, those who were repatriated and are now under investigation reportedly became involved in criminal activities through various means, including introductions from seniors or high-paying job advertisements. However, speculation arose regarding the deceased student, identified as Park, who was enrolled at University A and had traveled to Cambodia only to become entangled in the crime syndicate, leading to his tragic death. This has fueled conjecture that the information being shared might be misleading or misinterpreted.
