South Korea Lowers Travel Advisory for Cambodia Amid Improved Safety Conditions

The South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs has downgraded travel advisories for certain areas in Cambodia, including the capital city, Phnom Penh. This decision comes as concerns about kidnapping and confinement related to scam crimes have eased, following requests for a relaxation from the local government, expatriates, and the domestic travel industry.
As of 4 PM (Korean time) on the 4th, the Ministry has lifted the special travel advisory for Phnom Penh and adjusted it to Level 2 (Travel Restriction). Tourist destinations such as Siem Reap, home to the Angkor Wat temple complex, have also been downgraded from Level 2 (Travel Restriction) to Level 1 (Travel Caution).
However, the Ministry maintains existing travel warnings for certain regions: Kampot Provinces Bokor Mountain area, Bavet City, and Poipet City (Level 4 - Travel Ban), as well as Sihanoukville (Level 3 - Departure Recommendation), and Preah Vihear, Oddar Meanchey, Banteay Meanchey, Battambang, Pailin, Pursat, and Koh Kong provinces (Special Travel Advisory areas).
This adjustment in travel advisories reflects improvements in the situation following the Cambodian governments efforts to crack down on scam crimes, as well as the activation of the Korea-Cambodia Joint Task Force aimed at protecting South Korean citizens. The Ministry noted that, "As cooperation between the two countries strengthens, the number of reported scam-related incidents in Cambodia has decreased, and the situations in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap have significantly improved."
The Ministry will continue to monitor the situation in Cambodia closely and assess the necessity for further adjustments to travel advisories. However, it has cautioned that reports of South Koreans becoming victims of scam-related crimes continue to emerge, particularly in areas with Level 3 advisories or higher, emphasizing the need for ongoing vigilance.
