Thailand and Cambodia Reach Ceasefire Agreement After Renewed Clashes

On the 27th of the month, local time, the governments of Thailand and Cambodia held a defense ministerial meeting in the border area of Chanthaburi Province, Thailand, where they signed a ceasefire agreement.
In a joint statement, both defense ministers affirmed, "Both sides have agreed to maintain the current troop deployments without any further troop movements," and committed to halting the use of weapons and attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure.
The renewed clashes between the two countries began on the 7th of July after a previous ceasefire agreement brokered by U.S. President Donald Trump was broken. The conflict escalated into intense fighting over the span of 20 days following an incident where Thai troops were injured by a landmine explosion. The fighting resulted in at least 101 fatalities and forced more than 500,000 civilians to flee their homes.
The Thai military utilized F-16 fighter jets and Gripen aircraft to carry out airstrikes against Cambodian military positions and crime syndicates located in casinos. In response, Cambodia deployed Russian-made BM-21 multiple rocket launchers and artillery to target civilian residential areas in Thailand.
The agreement reached between the two nations aims to stabilize the situation and prevent further escalation of hostilities. The commitment to ceasefire is a significant step towards restoring peace in the region after a period of intense conflict.
