U.S. President Donald Trump announced on the 14th (local time) that he has once again stepped in to mediate as the peace agreement between Thailand and Cambodia faces the risk of collapse.

According to AFP, President Trump stated aboard Air Force One en route to his residence in Florida, "I stopped the war today using tariffs, threatening with tariffs." He mentioned that he had spoken with the Prime Ministers of Thailand and Cambodia, assuring, "They are doing well. It will work out." This statement serves as a reassurance that the peace agreement he recently mediated between Cambodia and Thailand will not fall apart.

The two countries have repeatedly displayed significant conflicts along their border, which escalated into violence last July when a landmine explosion injured eight Thai soldiers, leading to five days of military clashes. President Trump mediated a ceasefire agreement between the two nations during the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) summit held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, at the end of October.

Hoping to win a Nobel Peace Prize, President Trump has claimed that he has ended various wars around the globe, consistently citing the ceasefire mediation between Thailand and Cambodia as a prime example.

However, tensions have resurfaced recently, manifesting in armed conflicts. On the 10th of this month, another landmine explosion injured a Thai soldier in the eastern border region, prompting the Thai government to declare that it would not adhere to the ceasefire agreement. Just two days later, a shootout occurred, resulting in casualties on the Cambodian side, raising concerns about the potential breakdown of the ceasefire.

The White House disclosed that President Trump has communicated with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who co-mediated the ceasefire agreement between the two countries last month. On social media, Prime Minister Anwar confirmed, "I reaffirmed the commitment of the leaders of both countries to resolve the border dispute according to the Kuala Lumpur Peace Agreement," signaling a push for de-escalation in the conflict between Thailand and Cambodia.
