U.S. Secretary of State Rubio Emphasizes Cooperation with China Amid Global Tensions

On the 19th of this month, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the United States will actively seek cooperation with China. During a press conference held at the State Department in Washington, D.C., Rubio described China as "ultimately a wealthy and powerful nation that will continue to exist due to geopolitical factors." He emphasized the importance of maintaining relations and negotiating with China, stating, "We need to find areas where we can cooperate."
Rubio acknowledged that both the U.S. and China are mature enough to recognize that tensions will arise in the near future. He added, "We believe we have made good progress with China."
When asked about the recent tensions between China and Japan, he responded that he believes it is possible to engage in cooperation with China without jeopardizing or undermining the U.S. commitment to its partners in the Indo-Pacific region, including Japan and South Korea.
Regarding the China-Japan conflict, Rubio noted, "This kind of tension has existed for a long time; its one of the dynamics we need to balance in the region." He emphasized that the U.S. will continue its strong partnership with Japan while also exploring productive cooperation with the Chinese Communist Party and the Chinese government.
The press conference, which lasted over two hours, addressed not only issues surrounding China but also the war in Ukraine and problems concerning Latin American countries like Venezuela.
On the topic of ending the war in Ukraine, Rubio clarified, "We are not forcing a peace agreement but are looking to see if we can lead both sides to a common point. If Ukraine does not agree or if Russia does not agree, then there will be no peace agreement."
This statement reflects the U.S. government’s ongoing efforts to navigate complex international relations and highlight the necessity of collaboration, even amidst rising tensions.
