Young Adult Sentenced to 5.5 Years for Involvement in Cambodian Stock Scam

A 25-year-old individual has been sentenced to 5 years and 6 months in prison for participating in a fraudulent stock trading organization based in Cambodia.
According to News1 on the 28th, the first criminal division of the Daejeon District Court, chaired by Judge Jeon Gyeong-ho, issued the sentence the previous day to two individuals, including the accused, who were arrested and indicted on charges of joining a criminal organization.
The accused were charged with being active members of a scam organization known as K9, which operated from November 2023 to May 2024 in Cambodia.
The K9 organization was established in 2023 under the leadership of a figure referred to as Laoban in the Chinatown area of Sihanoukville, Cambodia. It conducted multinational telecommunications financial scams by securing investments from China and South Korea, purchasing a 23-story building, which served as both office space and accommodation for its members. They expanded their influence by offering incentives to members who recruited new participants and enforced strict rules prohibiting members from leaving the premises after joining.
The accused joined the organization after being introduced by an acquaintance in October 2023, who promised that by living in an overseas hotel and receiving meals and drinks, they could earn between 20 to 30 million KRW if they worked hard. Within the K9 organization, they served as managers who recommended stock picks to victims and as translators who reviewed Korean language chats from Chinese managers. They deceived victims by claiming that investing in the recommended stocks could yield returns of 100% to 300%, ultimately swindling over 3.1 billion KRW from 25 victims.
During the trial, the accused argued that they had left the organization upon returning to Korea in May and had not engaged in any further criminal activities. However, the court did not accept this claim.
The court explained that, "Considering the strong suspicion that they left for China again after returning to Korea in May and continued similar criminal activities, we determined the sentence accordingly."
