Naver Expands Its Massive Data Center Gaksejong to Enhance AI Capabilities
Naver is set to initiate the second and third phases of expansion for its massive data center, Gaksejong, located in Sejong City. Recently, Naver secured 60,000 next-generation graphics processing units (GPUs) from NVIDIA, significantly boosting the AI capabilities of Team Naver.
Gaksejong, designed as a 270 MW ultra-large AI hub, features a main building with three underground and three above-ground floors, complemented by a northern wing (server section) with three underground and two above-ground floors. The northern wing includes a control room equipped with a massive screen that monitors power usage and server status in real-time, while maintaining a consistent internal temperature of 26 degrees Celsius. This facility houses a high-density rack where GPUs are strategically placed, establishing it as one of the largest AI clusters in Asia, and a pivotal base for Navers AI business.
Covering a total area of 294,000 square meters (approximately 89,000 pyeong), Gaksejong is the largest AI data center in South Korea. It currently operates 100,000 servers and 2,240 A100 GPUs, enabling it to run a supercomputer with a computational power of up to 33 petaflops (PF), making it the second-largest facility in the country, following Samsung Electronics.
The data center aims to increase its power supply capacity from the current 47 MW to over 130 MW by 2029. To achieve this, the second phase of construction is scheduled to begin by the end of this year and is expected to be completed by 2027. The third phase is set to conclude in 2029. Upon completion of these expansions, the total server capacity will be increased to 600,000 units, which is 6.75 times larger than Naver’s existing data center in Chuncheon, Gangwon Province. The maximum power capacity is designed to reach 270 MW, with each rack capable of providing 30 kW of power.
The network bandwidth is structured to support up to 800 Gbps (gigabits per second), enabling simultaneous processing of large-scale AI model training and inference. A Naver representative stated that Gaksejong is positioned to significantly enhance the company’s AI infrastructure and capabilities.
