Ulsan Mayor Kim Doo-gyeom: A Strong Advocate for Business and Community Engagement
Kim Doo-gyeom, the mayor of Ulsan, is truly ‘business-friendly.’ Every time he visits a company site, he changes into the company’s work uniform, demonstrating his commitment to the local economy.
The pinnacle of his pro-business initiatives can be traced back to September of last year when he spearheaded a campaign to purchase shares of Korea Zinc in response to a private equity firms attempt at a hostile takeover. In an interview with a Korean economic newspaper on the 28th, Mayor Kim stated, "As the mayor of Ulsan, I could not stand idly by while the private equity firm attempted a predatory acquisition of Korea Zinc, a company that has shared both joys and hardships with our industrial city."
The movement to buy shares of Korea Zinc quickly gained momentum, spreading across political circles, the business community, social organizations, and citizens, becoming a grassroots effort to save the business. A year later, on the 16th, the Ulsan Industrial Festival took place, where Mayor Kim rode on a parade vehicle representing Korea Zinc, encouraging labor and management representatives.
"Seeing Korea Zinc stand firm and make strides as a global material company fills me with great joy. Just last month, we held a monthly work plan meeting at Korea Zinc with city and county officials to listen to their business challenges."
Korea Zinc is set to complete its ‘Chemco Nickel Refinery,’ which will supply 42,600 tons of secondary battery materials annually, next year, and Mayor Kim is committed to actively assisting in its successful investment.
The Ulsan Industrial Festival took place from the 16th to the 19th at the Taehwa River waterfront and various urban locations, themed ‘Ulsan, the Strongest! Ulsan is South Korea.’ Despite the rain, over 700,000 people attended. This year’s festival was appropriately aligned with Ulsan’s identity as a hub for artificial intelligence (AI), showcasing advanced technologies alongside a wealth of attractions, activities, and food, fostering participation from both citizens and businesses in a grand celebration.
