Recent interest in diet and obesity treatments has surged, revealing that one in two men aged 30 to 40 in South Korea is considered obese, according to a recent survey.

On October 10, the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) released an in-depth analysis of adult obesity rates based on data from the ‘2024 Community Health Survey,’ which involved approximately 230,000 adults aged 19 and older across the country.

The analysis highlighted a significant gender disparity in obesity rates. As of last year, the obesity rate for men was 41.4%, compared to 23.0% for women, indicating that men are approximately 1.8 times more likely to be obese than women. When broken down by age, the highest obesity rates among men were found in their 30s (53.1%) and 40s (50.3%), while for women, the highest rates were observed in older age groups, particularly in their 60s (26.6%) and 70s (27.9%).

Furthermore, there were notable differences in self-perception of obesity between genders. Among those classified as obese, 77.8% of men recognized themselves as such, while a significantly higher percentage of women (89.8%) identified as obese. Interestingly, even among those who are not classified as obese, a greater proportion of women (28.2%) viewed themselves as obese compared to men (13.0%), suggesting a larger gap between actual body type and self-perception among women.

The trend of increasing obesity rates among adults in South Korea is concerning. The obesity rate, which was 26.3% a decade ago, is projected to rise to 34.4% by 2024. This statistic translates to one in three adults being classified as obese.

Regional variations in obesity rates were also evident. The provinces with the highest obesity rates were Jeonnam and Jeju (both at 36.8%), while the lowest rate was found in Sejong (29.1%).

Obesity is not merely an issue of weight gain; it is a chronic health condition that can lead to serious diseases, including cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, and musculoskeletal disorders. These findings underscore the importance of addressing the obesity epidemic through effective public health strategies and interventions.
