On the 23rd, the KOSPI index initially broke past the 3900 mark during trading but eventually closed lower at around 3840. This decline stemmed from increased uncertainties surrounding the Korea-U.S. tariff negotiations, prompting significant sell-offs by foreign and institutional investors. The won-dollar exchange rate also surged, exceeding 1440 won for the first time in six months.

The KOSPI index closed at 3845.56, down 38.12 points (0.98%) from the previous session. After starting the day with a 1.23% drop, the index managed to turn around and briefly surpassed the 3900 mark, reaching as high as 3902.21. However, as the afternoon session progressed, a shift to net selling by institutions led to a further decline.

In the securities market, foreign investors sold off stocks worth 409 billion won, while institutions sold about 399 billion won. Institutions, which had initially engaged in buying at the start of the session, switched to selling in the afternoon. Although individual investors purchased 750 billion won worth of shares, it was insufficient to prevent the index from falling.

This situation is largely attributed to the heightened uncertainty surrounding the Korea-U.S. tariff negotiations amid trade tensions between the U.S. and China. Recent reports indicate that discussions are underway regarding a plan for Korea to invest approximately $200 billion (around 286 trillion won) in the U.S. over eight years, which translates to an annual investment of $25 billion.

On the 20th, Bank of Korea Governor Lee Chang-yong mentioned during a parliamentary audit that the amount that could be procured within a year without shocking the foreign exchange market would be between $15 billion and $20 billion. The recently discussed $25 billion exceeds this level.

Consequently, the won-dollar exchange rate soared. In the Seoul foreign exchange market, the won-dollar exchange rate closed at 1439.6 won, up 8.6 won from the previous session, marking the end of the week. At one point during the trading session, it climbed even higher.
