Government Responds to Controversy Over Real Estate Measures and Remarks by Deputy Minister

On the 23rd, the Presidential Office stated that it is listening carefully and seriously to various issues and the voices of the public regarding the remarks made by Lee Sang-kyung, the First Vice Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, and the controversy surrounding the October 15 Real Estate Measures.
During a briefing, Kim Nam-joon, the spokesperson for the Presidential Office, addressed inquiries about the Vice Ministers public apology, stating, "I will provide a comprehensive answer." He emphasized that they are closely monitoring the overall market trends and public sentiment following the real estate measures, which include the Vice Ministers controversial statements.
However, Kim added that the senior secretary meeting chaired by President Lee Jae-myung that day focused on fostering the defense industry, so there were no specific mentions regarding real estate issues.
The October 15 Measures involve the governments designation of all areas in Seoul and 12 locations in Gyeonggi Province as regulated areas (speculative overheating zones and adjustment areas) and land transaction permission zones. To explain these measures, the Vice Minister appeared on a YouTube channel.
In the broadcast, he made a statement suggesting that people should wait to buy homes until the market stabilizes through government policies, which stirred controversy. Critics pointed out that he failed to understand the anxiety of potential homebuyers who had previously trusted the government to control housing prices, only to find themselves in dire financial situations. Additionally, it was revealed that the Vice Ministers spouse had purchased a luxury apartment in Bundang, Seongnam, for around 3 billion won through a gap investment method, leading to criticism even from within the ruling party.
In response to the ongoing criticism, the Vice Minister issued a public apology.
