On the 31st, major figures in South Koreas business landscape, including Lee Jae-Yong, Chairman of Samsung Electronics; Chey Tae-Won, Chairman of SK Group; and Chung Eui-Sun, Chairman of Hyundai Motor Group, will meet with Jensen Huang, CEO of NVIDIA, in Gyeongju, South Korea, during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit. High-ranking government officials will also attend to discuss strategies for collaboration in artificial intelligence (AI).

According to the presidential office and related industry sources, this gathering will focus on strengthening AI collaboration, with senior government officials and the heads of the three major conglomerates engaging in discussions with CEO Huang. It is anticipated that Lee and Chey will hold separate meetings with Huang, as well as additional discussions.

This meeting marks a rare occasion where these prominent business leaders will convene with government representatives. During the session, the government is expected to outline its policies for investment and support in AI, as well as its future strategies. There may also be discussions on the possibility of the government purchasing NVIDIAs graphics processing units (GPUs), which are currently in short supply. President Lee Jae-Myung had pledged to secure 50,000 GPUs during his presidential campaign, aiming to distribute them to startups and universities to rapidly enhance AI technology.

Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix are already engaged in deep relationships with NVIDIA, working on supplying or delivering high-bandwidth memory (HBM) semiconductors. The roundtable is likely to delve into the AI semiconductor supply chain in greater detail. Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, met with President Lee, Chairman Lee, and Chairman Chey in South Korea on the 1st, during which they discussed HBM, potentially leading NVIDIA to request additional HBM supplies.

Hyundai Motor is expected to address vertical AI applicable to hardware such as autonomous vehicles and robotics. Earlier this January, Hyundai formed a partnership with NVIDIA to apply AI technology to autonomous driving and robotics, which will also be a topic of discussion during the meeting.
