Cambodian authorities have arrested an additional 57 South Koreans linked to online fraud crimes.

According to reports from AP and AFP on the 23rd, the Cambodian Online Fraud Response Committee (CCOS) announced that Cambodian police raided a crime syndicate on the outskirts of the capital Phnom Penh on the previous day, apprehending a total of 86 individuals, including 57 South Koreans and 29 Chinese nationals. During the operation, police also confiscated 126 computers and 30 mobile phones.

Earlier, 64 South Koreans who had been detained by immigration authorities due to crackdowns on crime syndicates in Cambodia were repatriated to South Korea on a charter flight on the 18th. These individuals are suspected of involvement in crimes such as voice phishing and romance scams, which are perpetrated from a crime syndicate known as wenchi.

The South Korean government has taken action in response to a tragic incident in which a South Korean university student died after being tortured in a Cambodian crime syndicate. In light of this, the government dispatched a joint response team led by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Kim Jin-ah to Cambodia. Both countries have agreed to establish a task force (TF) to jointly address issues related to online fraud, as well as cases of kidnapping and confinement.

The South Korean government estimates that around 1,000 of the approximately 200,000 individuals involved in fraudulent activities in Cambodia are South Korean nationals.
