15-Year-Old Violinist Kim Hyun-seo Advances to Finals of 58th Paganini Competition

Fifteen-year-old Kim Hyun-seo, a student at the Korea National University of Arts, has made it to the finals of the 58th Paganini International Violin Competition. Alongside Kim, two other finalists were announced: Rino Yoshimoto from Japan (22) and Zhang Ao-zhe from China (17), with each country represented by one finalist.
On the 23rd (local time), the organizers of the Paganini Competition revealed the names of the three finalists following the semifinal stage. Kim Hyun-seo is notably the youngest finalist in the competition.
The final performance is set to take place on the 25th at the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa, Italy. The finalists are required to perform one of Paganinis violin concertos, as well as a piece from composers such as Schumann, Mendelssohn, Beethoven, Brahms, Dvořák, Tchaikovsky, or Sibelius.
In the finals, Kim will perform Paganinis Violin Concerto No. 1 and Tchaikovskys Violin Concerto with an orchestra.
The Paganini International Violin Competition is a prestigious global event held in Genoa, Italy, established in 1954 to honor the legendary violinist Niccolò Paganini. The competition is known as a springboard for emerging talents, having seen Korean violinist Yang In-mo win the competition in 2015.
Born in 2010, Kim Hyun-seo began playing the violin at the age of three and secured second place at the Bioti International Competition in Italy last October. In March of this year, she became the youngest student ever admitted to the Korea National University of Arts at the age of 15, sharing this record with flutist Han Yeo-jin and cellist Han Jae-min. In 2024, she is expected to receive the Presidents Award from the university.
Kim Hyun-seo is quickly making a name for herself in the Korean violin scene and is widely regarded as a promising talent for the future.
