Allegations of Police Drinking During Duty Spark Controversy in Yangyang, Gangwon-do
In Yangyang, Gangwon-do, allegations surfaced on social media claiming that uniformed police officers were seen drinking alcohol at a restaurant. In response to these claims, the police denied any misconduct.
On the 22nd, a post on social media reported that police officers were witnessed partaking in a drinking gathering at a restaurant located on Yangrindan-gil in Yangyang. The individual who posted the claim stated, "I saw two police officers in uniform, armed with guns, entering the restaurant and participating in a gathering of about eight people. When I looked closely, I clearly saw them pouring drinks into their glasses."
The poster expressed doubt about what they were witnessing, stating, "I kept watching and saw them pouring and consuming alcohol two or three times, so I hurriedly took a picture." They went on to explain that after some contemplation, they called the direct line to the Gangwon Police Agency to report the situation. The response was curt, instructing them to file a report through the 112 emergency number. Upon doing so, the poster reported the incident, emphasizing that such behavior should not occur.
"Shortly after, something surprising happened. One of the police officers drinking at the restaurant called my phone and claimed it was a misunderstanding and that they had not consumed alcohol," the poster recounted. They highlighted that if a report had been filed with 112, other officers should have responded to investigate and enforce any drinking violations. However, it was revealed that the 112 situation room contacted the officers at the restaurant directly, leading to the officer calling the informant.
The individual reiterated, "When I called 112 again to clarify the situation, the police kept making excuses, indicating a lack of proper action and seemingly protecting their own." They emphasized that the officers, armed and in uniform, parked their patrol car in front of the restaurant and spent over an hour drinking while on duty.
The Sokcho Police Station, responsible for the Yangyang area, stated that drinking while on duty is a serious offense, and investigations are underway to address the claims.
