On October 3rd, a concert titled was held at Jordan Hall, New England Conservatory in Boston, and on October 5th at Town Hall in New York. This event celebrated the 80th anniversary of Koreas liberation and the 100th anniversary of the Korean American Church, alongside the opening of an exhibition dedicated to the Korean independence movement. The New York Town Hall, where Korean independence activities first began on March 2, 1921, added a significant historical context to the occasion, coinciding with the recent inauguration of the independence movement exhibition.

The concert was organized by the Korean American Diaspora Foundation, with participation from the New York Classical Players (NYCP), the Korean American Arts Council of Boston, the Korea Music Foundation, and the Korean Cultural Center in New York, along with support from government agencies including the Veterans Affairs.

Originally planned to mark the centennial of the Korean American Church in New York, this project faced several delays due to the pandemic and the postponement of the exhibition opening. Notably, pianist Paik Hye-sun, as the chairperson of the Diaspora Foundation, overcame various administrative and financial hurdles to bring the concert to fruition.

Under the direction of conductor Kim Dong-min, the performance opened with Beethovens Coriolan Overture. NYCP, a young and innovative chamber orchestra based in New York, celebrated its 16th anniversary this year. Kim established the orchestra with the principle of providing free concerts to ensure that everyone can enjoy classical music. They have performed across the United States, as well as stages in South America and Asia, maintaining a high level of artistry.

In addition to popular classics, the orchestra has committed itself to commissioning bold new works and uncovering lesser-known pieces, contributing to the dissemination of contemporary music. To date, they have premiered over 100 new compositions, enriching the cultural landscape and expanding the reach of classical music.

This concert not only celebrated significant milestones in Korean history but also highlighted the enduring spirit of the Korean diaspora, showcasing the power of music to unite communities and honor the legacy of those who fought for freedom.
