Democratic Party Lawmaker Criticized for Handling MBC Reporters Amid Controversy

Choi Min-hee, the chair of the National Assemblys Science, Technology, Information and Broadcasting Committee from the Democratic Party, has responded to criticisms from MBC reporters regarding her actions during a recent national audit. She questioned, "Is biased reporting in favor of the People Power Party a form of press freedom?" This statement comes in light of backlash following her decision to expel MBCs news division head during the closed-door audit session.
Chois ongoing strong remarks have drawn criticism even from within her own party. Park Ji-won, a Democratic Party lawmaker, appeared on CBS Radios Kim Hyun-jungs News Show on the 23rd, stating, "Kicking out the news division head for MBCs explicit reporting on Kim Geon-hee is excessive. This morning, both progressive and conservative newspapers criticized him in their editorials. It would be better for Chair Choi to express appropriate regret over the situation."
Park emphasized the importance of respecting press freedom in a democratic society, pointing out that Choi, who has previously played a significant role in expelling the chair of the Korea Communications Commission, should act more judiciously. He advised, "Politicians need to be patient. It is beneficial for Choi Min-hees political career to swiftly address any flaws."
Former People Power Party lawmaker Lee Yong-ho also criticized Chois actions during an appearance on YTN news, labeling them as an abuse of power. He argued, "If there are issues of unfairness, there should have been a complaint filed with the Media Arbitration Committee. It doesn’t make sense to insult and expel someone. Just because someone is the head of the news division doesn’t mean they can be interfered with on a case-by-case basis. Chair Choi should apologize for her actions, which were inappropriate to the extent that she should not remain in her position."
On the same day, Choi took to her social media to explain the situation during the controversial closed-door audit of MBC on the 20th, indicating that the actions leading to her statement were influenced by the stance of the People Power Party. The unfolding events highlight the tensions between political figures and media outlets in South Korea, raising questions about the boundaries of press freedom and the accountability of public officials.
