The headquarters of fusion energy startup Fuze, located in San Leandro, California, recently made headlines as visitors were required to surrender all electronic devices, including mobile phones and laptops, before entering. This strict security measure is due to Fuzes partnerships with prestigious institutions such as the Los Alamos National Laboratory, a key site of the Manhattan Project, and Sandia National Laboratories, which conducts sensitive national security research. Fuze is dedicated to the ambitious goal of harnessing fusion energy, often referred to as the dream energy.

The facility, spanning over 4,000 square meters—larger than half a soccer field—was unveiled to Korean investors and the media last month. It houses crucial equipment for fusion operations, including fusion drivers and various manufacturing facilities. Most of the employees are in their 20s and 30s, hailing from esteemed universities such as UC Berkeley and Stanford, bringing a vibrant energy typical of startups to the workplace.

Leading this innovative team is CEO JC Buttish, who at just 25 years old, embodies the spirit of youthful ambition. The son of a Lebanese nuclear physicist, Buttish immigrated to Canada at the age of 16 to study nuclear physics. Instead of pursuing a traditional college path, he opted to start his own company at 19. His vision has attracted notable figures such as former Iranian Nuclear Agency chief scientist Vahid Damideh and former Trump administration Energy Department nuclear security deputy Lisa Gordon-Hagerty to join the Fuze team. As of September of the previous year, Fuzes corporate valuation was estimated to exceed $200 million (approximately 284 billion KRW).

Buttishs aspiration is to make Fuze the SpaceX of fusion energy. Just as Elon Musk achieved what seemed impossible with the reuse of space launch vehicles, Buttish aims to accelerate the realization of fusion energy, which is considered a future cornerstone of sustainable power.

Fusion energy technology involves the process of light atomic nuclei combining to form heavier nuclei, releasing energy that can be utilized for power generation. This process mimics the energy production of the sun and holds the potential for a transformative impact on energy production worldwide.
