K-Cultures Global Influence: Amitav Ghosh Wins the Park Kyung-ri Literary Award

K-pop, literature, cinema... South Korea has achieved remarkable success in the cultural sector over the past 20 years, leading global culture.
Amitav Ghosh, the winner of this years Park Kyung-ri Literary Award, met with Korean journalists on the 22nd at the Seoul Press Center. He stated, "Korean culture has a significant impact on Indian youth as well," expressing his honor at being selected for the prestigious award.
Ghosh remarked on the changing landscape of global literature, saying, "In the last century, Western authors writing in European languages dominated the literary scene, and despite the wonderful literary worlds created by Indian authors, there was an unfortunate atmosphere where they did not receive proper recognition. Currently, the horizons of world literature are shifting. I believe Han Kang, who received the Nobel Prize in Literature, is one such example."
The Park Kyung-ri Literary Award is the first global author award established in Korea in 2011 to honor the late author Park Kyung-ri. Ghosh noted, "I have tried to read Park Kyung-ri’s Land, but I was unable to find an English translation. I managed to get a few short stories, and I found the themes he addresses to be very intriguing as they resonate deeply with my life and literature."
Ghosh, born in Kolkata, India, in 1956, is a novelist and social anthropologist. He shared insights into his family background, stating, "My family is from Bangladesh, but I grew up in India. India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh have all faced issues of division. Although Korea is currently a wealthy country, through Park Kyung-ri’s works, I was able to witness the concerns of a time of poverty, such as the costs of tea, food, and train tickets. Coming from a poor country myself, I read with deep empathy."
As a prominent figure in contemporary literature, Ghoshs recognition highlights the interconnectedness of cultures and the evolving dynamics of literary appreciation in a globalized world.
