Koreas Cultural Renaissance: Amitav Ghosh Receives the Park Kyung-ri Literary Award

Over the past two decades, Korea has made remarkable achievements in cultural fields such as K-Pop, literature, and film, leading the way in global culture. This was highlighted during a press conference held on the 22nd at the Korea Press Center, where Amitav Ghosh was announced as the recipient of this years Park Kyung-ri Literary Award.
Ghosh, an acclaimed novelist and social anthropologist born in Kolkata, India in 1956, noted that while Western authors dominated the literary landscape in the last century, the horizon of world literature is changing. He pointed to South Korean author Han Kang, a Nobel laureate, as a prime example of this shift.
Ghoshs literary work often addresses themes such as post-colonialism, diaspora, memory, history, and the oppression of women in patriarchal societies under the guise of culture and tradition, as well as climate change. He began his writing career in 1986 with his first novel, "The Circle of Reason," which won the Medici Award. The Park Kyung-ri Literary Award, established in 2011 to honor the late author Park Kyung-ri, is Koreas first global literary award.
Reflecting on Parks work, Ghosh shared, "I read a few of her short stories, and I found many connections to my life and literature, which I found very interesting." Ghoshs family is originally from Bangladesh, and he grew up in India—a region marked by a history of division involving Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan. He remarked, "Although South Korea is a wealthy country now, through Park Kyung-ri’s works, I was reminded of a time of poverty when one had to worry about the price of tea, rice, and train tickets. I read her work with deep empathy, having come from a poor country myself."
Currently, Ghosh is focusing on the theme of climate change. His nonfiction work, "The Nutmegs Curse," explores the roots of the climate crisis in imperialism, alongside his translated works in Korea, including "The Glass Palace," "The Great Derangement," and "Smoke and Ashes." Ghoshs contributions to literature and his insights into cultural and historical contexts continue to resonate in todays global discourse.
