On the 21st, during the House of Representatives election for the Prime Minister in Japan, Takaiichi Sanae was announced to have received 237 votes, just above the majority of 233. At that moment, he closed his eyes and sighed in relief, reflecting the precarious political reality he faces. Speculations are already circulating that he might be remembered as a short-lived prime minister. Yet, his expression suggests that the motto of a strong Japan will not be easily realized, hinting at potential turbulence in both Japanese politics and Japan-Korea relations.

After a series of ups and downs, the Takaiichi administration has begun. Contrary to expectations, he won decisively against young blood Koizumi Shinjiro in the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) presidential election. It appeared that he would easily seize the honor of becoming Japans first female prime minister after being the first female LDP president. However, the Komeito Party, which had been a coalition partner of the LDP for 26 years, has turned its back on him. The collapse of the LDP-Komeito coalition presents a rare opportunity for the main opposition party, the Constitutional Democratic Party, to push for a change in government. They have sought to form a coalition with the Japan Innovation Party and the Democratic Party for the People, putting forth the condition of conceding the prime minister position.

However, the Japan Innovation Party has allied with Takaiichi, who is often referred to as the female Abe. This alliance represents a combination that is particularly uncomfortable from a South Korean perspective, as it brings together the far-right Takaiichi and the conservative, right-leaning Innovation Party.

During the final party leader meeting to establish a coalition government, Takaiichi and Hirofumi Yoshimura, the leader of the Innovation Party, expressed that both parties share a national perspective, showing synergy towards their goal of establishing a militarized Japan. While the centrist and conservative Komeito Party has acted as a brake on the LDP’s rightward shift, there are concerns that the Innovation Party may serve as an accelerator in this regard. The constitutional amendments and security enhancements demanded by the Innovation Party as conditions for coalition government are likely to resonate with Takaiichis political stance, further complicating the already delicate balance of power in Japan.
