Popular Mukbang YouTuber Tzuyang Testifies Against Cyber Reckers
On the 14th, popular Mukbang YouTuber Tzuyang (real name Park Jeong-won) appeared as a witness at the National Assemblys National Communication Commissions audit of the Ministry of Science and ICT.
During the session, Tzuyang testified about the damage caused by cyber wreckers—YouTubers who maliciously manipulate celebrity issues for profit—stating, "It wasnt easy. Its very difficult for ordinary citizens, workers, and students to respond to such situations."
Having suffered from threats and extortion by cyber wreckers, Tzuyang recounted her experience when asked by National Assembly member Kim Jang-gyeom about the legal proceedings. She expressed that she did not receive prompt assistance from platforms like YouTube during her ordeal.
"I was in such a frightening and helpless situation that I couldnt do anything at the time of the incident," Tzuyang shared. "I am incredibly grateful that many people took an interest in the case and offered their help. However, for ordinary citizens, it would be difficult to gather the funds needed for a lawsuit while managing their livelihoods."
When another member of the same party, Choi Hyung-doo, inquired whether Google (YouTube) responded quickly to the issue, Tzuyang replied, "Honestly, I dont think it was easy. The speed at which videos spread is incredibly fast, and even if the removal process occurs, it is very challenging to clear up misunderstandings."
She elaborated on the duration it took to delete the videos she reported, stating, "Some were removed in as little as a week, while others were not removed at all."
Tzuyang also expressed her concerns about attending the hearing, saying, "I was very worried and scared about whether I should be here. I feel a sense of responsibility as someone who has experienced severe online harassment, and I felt compelled to step forward when invited to such an important occasion."
According to the Broadcasting Media Communication Committee, cyber wreckers pose a significant threat to individuals in the public eye, and the committee is looking into measures to combat this growing problem.
