SK Hynix CEO Receives Gold Tower Industrial Medal at Semiconductor Day Ceremony

On October 22, Kwak No-jung, the CEO of SK Hynix, received the prestigious Gold Tower Industrial Medal during the 18th Semiconductor Day ceremony. The award recognized his leadership in the global artificial intelligence (AI) memory semiconductor market, particularly through the development of High Bandwidth Memory (HBM).
The ceremony took place at the Grand InterContinental Seoul Parnas in Gangnam, where a total of 83 individuals who have contributed to the advancement of the semiconductor industry were honored with various government awards, including medals and commendations. The event is held annually each October to commemorate the date when South Korea achieved $10 billion in semiconductor exports in 1994, which is recognized as Semiconductor Day.
Kwak, who received the highest honor, the Gold Tower Industrial Medal, was acknowledged for his contributions to expanding exports through the high-value HBM technology. He began his career in 1994 at Hyundai Electronics, which later became SK Hynix, and has since built a robust background in research and development (R&D) as well as manufacturing and production. After being appointed CEO in March 2022, he has led SK Hynix to become the world’s number one manufacturer of DRAM chips in the first quarter of this year, particularly excelling in the HBM market.
Additionally, Heo Seong-hoe, Vice President of Samsung Electronics and head of the Flash Development Division, received the Silver Tower Industrial Medal for his role in leading the development of the industry’s first mass-produced 9th generation vertical NAND flash 286-layer products, which were launched in April of last year. The Bronze Tower Industrial Medal was awarded to Park Young-soo, CEO of Solbrain, for successfully localizing high-purity hydrogen fluoride and other process materials critical for semiconductor manufacturing.
The ceremony attracted over 550 attendees, including Song Jae-hyeok, President of the Korean Semiconductor Industry Association and Chief Technology Officer of Samsung Electronics’ semiconductor division. In his opening remarks, Song noted, "With the rise of AI and increasing demand for advanced semiconductors, Koreas competitiveness is gaining global attention." The event highlighted the significant role of the semiconductor industry in driving technological advancements and economic growth in South Korea.
