At a recent forum held at the Korea Economic Daily building in Jung-gu, Seoul, industry leaders discussed the transformative power of artificial intelligence (AI) in various sectors. Kim Dong-hwan, CEO of 42 Maru, emphasized the efficiency of AI in engineering, noting that while a team of 50 engineers typically takes 2 to 3 months to draft designs for the smallest LNG carriers, AI can accomplish this task in about ten days. He highlighted that past technological advancements that increased productivity by 20-30% were celebrated, but AI can achieve a remarkable 90% improvement independently.

On the other hand, Kim Min-hyun, CEO of Common Computer, raised concerns about AI technologies like ChatGPT. He pointed out that such platforms generate answers without directing traffic back to the content creators, unlike the Web 1.0 and Web 2.0 models, which allowed for a reciprocal exchange of content and traffic. This new model threatens the economic framework that supports content creators by consuming their work without compensating them adequately.

The forum, titled 2025 Hankyung Digital ABCD Forum, featured discussions on AI transformation strategies and the construction of automated agent networks in B2B applications. Both leaders showcased how AI is being implemented across various industries, including electronics, telecommunications, finance, engineering, automotive, call centers, commerce, media, law, education, and defense. AIs strength particularly lies in its ability to standardize and organize data efficiently.

For instance, in the engineering sector, AI has been utilized to construct fault prediction systems. Traditionally, a group of ten engineers would take four years to build such a system based on 30 years of unstandardized data. In stark contrast, AI can create the same system in just 2 to 3 days using the same dataset, allowing for immediate deployment in the field.

Kim Dong-hwan stressed the importance of not only studying AI but also examining numerous case studies. He noted that many of the challenges currently faced by companies have already been addressed by competitors in the industry, suggesting that learning from these examples is crucial for progress.

As AI continues to evolve, its potential to revolutionize industries and reshape economic models remains both exciting and concerning. The insights shared at the forum underline the necessity for businesses to adapt and rethink their strategies in an era increasingly influenced by artificial intelligence.
