As the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit approaches, set to take place in Gyeongju, South Korea, interest is mounting regarding the menu for the leaders dinner. This event, scheduled for October 31, is expected to incorporate local ingredients from the Gyeongju region, with notable mentions including Hanwoo beef and flounder.

Reports suggest that the menu will be revealed on the day of the dinner. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs maintains a policy of confidentiality regarding the dinner menu, emphasizing security protocols for the attending heads of state.

Given the events location, there is a strong likelihood that regional specialty ingredients will feature prominently. The Ministry is currently discussing when to publicly disclose the menu.

Some of the highlighted local specialties include:
- Cheonnyeon Hanwoo (local premium beef)
- Isagum white rice
- Flounder

Cheonnyeon Hanwoo is a locally branded beef produced by Gyeongju’s livestock cooperative. The city is renowned for its diverse agricultural and marine products, thanks to its unique geographical position between the sea and mountains.

In a previous APEC summit held in Busan in 2005, a beef dish called Neobiani was served, which raises expectations that Hanwoo beef will be included in this year’s menu as well. Gyeongju is one of the leading regions in South Korea for Hanwoo cattle farming. Additionally, seafood such as flounder and abalone, caught off the East Coast of Gyeongju, are also likely to be featured.

For beverages, traditional drinks such as Gyeongju Gyo-dong Beopju (a type of rice wine), Krate Medium Dry (fruit wine from Gimcheon Sudosan Winery), Daemongjae 1779 (another rice wine), and Andong Soju (distilled spirit) are among the strong contenders. These drinks were previously showcased during a welcoming dinner for the APEC cultural industry high-level dialogue in August.

The upcoming leaders dinner is poised to highlight the rich culinary heritage of the Gyeongju region, potentially amplifying the global appeal of K-Food in the wake of the APEC summit. The anticipation leading up to this event is a testament to the growing interest in South Korean cuisine on the international stage.
