Gyeongbuk Kimcheon City Enhances Kimbap Festival to Attract More Visitors

Gyeongbuk Kimcheon City is set to significantly improve the content and operational framework of its Kimbap Festival. In light of the popularity generated by Netflixs original content K-Pop Demon Hunters, the city plans to increase the number of kimbap vendors and shuttle bus services.
According to News1 on the 9th, the 2nd Kimcheon Kimbap Festival will take place on the 25th and 26th of next month, with the venue expanded from Samyeong Dae Park to Jikji Cultural Park. This expansion aims to resolve issues related to crowding in the festival area.
Last year, the festival prepared over 16,000 kimbaps, but was overwhelmed by around 100,000 visitors—five times the expected number—leading some tourists to leave without tasting the kimbap.
With the recent scene from K-Pop Demon Hunters, where the main character Rumi bites into a whole roll of kimbap going viral among international fans, the city anticipates a significant influx of foreign tourists this year. The festival will be divided into three themed zones named Mooji Ring Zone, Oing Zone, and Hamji Zone, utilizing key kimbap ingredients like pickled radish, cucumber, and ham to create a festive autumn picnic atmosphere.
To ensure there is no shortage of kimbap, the number of vendors will increase from 8 to over 30. The festival will showcase more than 50 varieties of kimbap, including local kimbap, storytelling kimbap, frozen kimbap leading the K-food trend, unique kimbap from all eight provinces of Korea, award-winning kimbap from cooking competitions, and popular franchise kimbap.
To address previous issues regarding long wait times at purchasing points, kiosks will be installed at each kimbap booth. Additionally, large LED screens will display real-time information on the quantity of kimbap available from each vendor.
The shuttle bus service, which was cited as the biggest problem during last years festival, will be quadrupled. The routes will also be improved to minimize travel distances, ensuring smoother transportation for festival-goers. Overall, these enhancements aim to create a more enjoyable experience for both local and international visitors.
